It's the Holiday Season
With the whoop-de-do and hickory dock
And don't forget to hang up your sock
'Cause just exactly at 12 o'clock
He'll be coming down the chimney
Coming down the chimney
Coming down the chimney, down!
(I hope you know that song, otherwise you're thinking I'm really strange--just like I thought Dan was really strange the first time I heard him sing it)
Okay, I've been waiting to post this "survey" for a while. Some of you have been getting it in email form, so don't feel pressured to answer again here. But, if you want to, I'd love to know your answers. I'll post my answers below, in case anyone cares.
In 10 days I will be preparing for Santa's arrival! I am so excited!
Getting to know you (sing it with me!) getting to know all about you

6. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
7. Can you ice skate?
8. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
9. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
10. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

12. What's your favorite Christmas song?
13. Artificial tree, pre-cut tree, or cut-your-own tree?
14. Do you have Christmas decorations in your bathroom? Or, where is the oddest place you have decorations in your house?
My Answers
1. we actually drink egg nog--something Dan introduced me to--I love it! But I also really like hot chocolate, which I drink all year round.
2. white lights
3. I usually put up decorations the first week in December, then the tree is done Christmas Eve
4. Sweet potatoes, definitely--I think because they're a lot like dessert
5. I don't remember when I learned the truth about Santa, but I know that my sister likes to tell everyone that I told her Santa's secret after I found out, even though she probably would have had a few good years left to enjoy it
6. My family used to, but Dan is dead set against it. He thinks it's cheating. BUT, just yesterday I got the boys some PJs & am hoping to persuade Dan to let me give them to the kids on Christmas Eve. Since I went outside our clothes budget for them, he might be pretty upset. And I don't think he'll let me use the toy budget for them. If anyone would like to contribute to the PJ-fund, you can send donations to First Leichner Bank, Account #333333. Just kidding. :)
7. Every time I ice skate, which is about once every 3 years or so, I start off shaky but warm up to it & get better within an hour or two--just about when it's time to leave!
8. Despite the hectic-ness of the weeks leading up to Christmas, I love the relaxed way we've been doing Christmas the past few years. Just soaking it up & trying to enjoy the boys & their excitement as much as possible.
9. I have to choose ONE?? Nana always makes divinity & saves some extra for me. I also love chocolate pecan pie, tollhouse pie, cookies, apple pie, pumpkin pie......
10. As crazy as it is since I put up a big stink about it a few years ago, now I love our unique tradition of getting our Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. It gives us something to do the day before Christmas, anyway. :)
11. Uh, yeah! (said with valley girl voice)
12. What Child Is This?
13. Cut-your-own every year!
14. Yes, I do have some in my bathroom. A tree-shaped bar of soap & some towels with Christmas trees on them.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Niether - Jim beam
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Santa doesn't come to our house. We all do our Christmas shopping together so Santa just doesn't fit in anywhere. Also, we work bloody hard to make Christmas special [presents and stuff] and we aren't giving all that credit to a fat guy in a red suit! lol And besides, Keep "Christ" in CHRISTmas.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
White on the tree but coloured on the back porch.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
Nope
5. When do you put your decorations up?
Nov 23 - My late mums birthday :o)
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
The roast dinner with all the trimmings!
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
My mum told me that if i listened really carefully, i could hear the sliegh bells in the distance. I listened real hard and i "heard" them lol
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
When i was two i pulled his beard off when having my photo taken with santa at the mall. Mum spent the next ten years trying to convince me he was real. And yet one thing Mum wouldn't tolerate from us kids was lying. We got a hard slap in the face every time she caught us out. So i lost a certain kind of respect for my mother that could never be replaced.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Christmas morning. I don't get why people let there kids open presents on Christmas eve. Then they go to bed all hyped up because they want to play with their presents.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
Green and gold tinsil on a fake 5ft tree with coloured glitter baubles and plain lights with a gold star on top.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Love it! [We don't get much here in Australia]
12. Can you ice skate?
Nope, never tried.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
An optic fibre lamp that looks like long bendy twigs in a vase untill you turn it on at night and the "twigs" change colour continuously. It stands about 4 feet tall and it's a real feature! My husband bought it for me last year and i love it SOOOOOOOOOO much!
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Family being together and getting along.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Christmas pudding with custard and White Christmas.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Putting up the tree and decorating it. Especialy putting all the kids orniments that they've made at school over the years :o)
17. What tops your tree?
A plain glitter gold star
18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving?
Both
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?
Silent night.
20. Candy Canes: Yuck or Yum?
We buy our canes a year ahead because after a year they are "stale". Soft and yummy like a Mintie :o)
21. Do you have music playing
while decorating your tree and house?
Nope. Just do it while watching the tele.
22. Artificial tree, pre-cut tree, or cut-your-own tree?
I'd rather have a real tree, but we have a fake one...being all enviromentaly freindly and all.
23. Do you have Christmas decorations in your bathroom? Or, where is the oddest place you have decorations in your house?
We have some fairy lights in our bathroom all year round because they have a soft, romantic glow. Nice to relax in the bath :o)
Nice blog by the way! Keep up the good work :o)
Thank you, CactusFreek, whoever you are. :) Just to let everyone else know. I published all those (23) questions & decided that was too much to ask. So as I was working on trimming it down, CactusFreek was working on all those questions! Wow, that's a lot of work for someone who doesn't even know me!! Thanks!
Okay, does anyone know how cool I feel right now? Talk about international!! I have a Brit & an Aussie posting on my blog!! Oh, and there's that cool girl in Bolivia :), but I don't know if Laura counts since she's not actually a native Bolivian.
I did a similar list last year, you can see it here.
Some of your questions are different so I'll answer those, too.
11. Always while decorating the tree. If it's on while decorating the house, it's just because I like Christmas music or because it was done at the same time as the trimming of the tree.
13. artificial - we have a few real tree horror stories from our young married days. When we bought our house we bought an artificial tree and this year, after Christmas, we are planning on upgrading to a pre-lit tree!! Woot!
14. In the hall bathroom, which is the one the kids mainly use, there is a Christmas-y candle. My bathroom is too small to really put anything in there. Sweetpea has a fiber optic tree in her room. But everything else is set out in the "living" spaces.
I love these! Here are my answers:
1. Well I grew up drinking Egg Nog and I really like it, but I like Hot Chocolate. So it really depends on my mood.

5. The day after Thanksgiving the tree goes up and then with in the week pretty much everything is done

On Christmas morning my cousins and I got up real early (like4) and went to feed the hoeses only to find all the stalls decorated with lights and garland and a little tree in the middle of the barn with presents for the horses under it. It wasn't there the night before so we got really excited. I have more , but you asked for 1
8. I'm not sure how old I was, but I saw my parents getting the stocking filled and putting a few "from Santa" gifts under the tree
9. Only since I have married my Husband. His imediate family opens them on Christmas eve. If it is just us, we do it all on Christmsa day
10. White lights and all sorts of ornaments. Some homemade, store bought and family heirlooms (way up at the top). This year Caleb made a paper plate angel that is our topper.

wow..ok missed the trimmed down version on your page. I just read the questions that cactusfreak had on her comment. So now you just have another really long comment! :)
Just stopping by...I think Barngoddess sent this around...maybe she got it from you.

10. I think probably putting up the tree, we always did that as a family and it was fun to reminisce.
11. Most definitely (Carpenter's Christmas album, or the classics like bing crosby)
12. Any classic (although the Elvis version of I'll have a blue Christmas was always a fun one to lip sync to in the wallace household :)
13. If there's a tree farm we can go to, definitely cut-your-own... but here in Bolivia we're atrificialling it this year.
14. The container we shipped was a little tight on space :) so we have the bare essentials in decorations which doesn't leave much extra for bathroom decor :)
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Absolutely Hot Chocolate! Especially with those little white marshmallows.
2. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I love the white lights. Makes everything look very glamorous. Blue lights are kinda cool too!
3. When do you put your decorations up?
Whenever Mom wants to. I don't have a particular time, I just usually go with the flow. I have put up decorations in my classroom. Pretty much happened on the first day of December (even before I changed the calendar!)
4. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Mashed potatoes. I could eat them all day long. Even without gravy!
5. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
Yes, Lisa, you did tell me about Santa! I don't know how old we were, but it was the year we got the toy vaccuum. You pointed out the fact that it was Mom's handwriting as "Santa". I think she tried to tell us that she just helped Santa, but we didn't buy it. Did I mentioned you ruined the Tooth Fairy & Easter Bunny too?!?
6. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
I love to open a gift on Christmas Eve. It is fun to have a little surprise the night before. It was a tradition growing up & I want to continue it! Or maybe it is just the selfish part of me that doesn't want to wait for "Santa" to deliver the gifts!
7. Can you ice skate?

Getting to be with family!
9. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Nighty-Nights - wonderful, wonderful cookies. Also German Chocolate Brownie Drops.

11. Do you have music playing while decorating your tree and house?
Usually. Sometime after Thanksgiving the music starts & never seems to stop.
12. What's your favorite Christmas song?
The Muppet's singing the Twelve Days of Christmas. I love Ms. Piggy singing "Five Gold Rings (Ba dumb, bump, bump)!
13. Artificial tree, pre-cut tree, or cut-your-own tree?
I would love to cut down my own tree, but will settle for a pre-cut one. I love the smell of the fresh pine that fills the house!
14. Do you have Christmas decorations in your bathroom? Or, where is the oddest place you have decorations in your house?
I guess I am boring. I only have decorations in the usual places. I wait till Easter for unusual decorating! (You can ask my friend Jaime about the time we hid Easter eggs all over her room! She was finding them for weeks!)
Hmmm, maybe I have had eggnog before being married to Dan. Did I like it? I don't remember.
By the way, Malia, the link to your old post had me reading all your December 2005 posts, & on & on. It was fun reading what you wrote a year ago.
I think Marie wins the prize for oddest place for Christmas decorations. :)
Okay, CactusFreek, that tongue sticking out at me is really freaking me out. LOL
Thanks for stopping by, Rebecca. It's always fun to see new faces. :) Dan teaches 5th grade.
Now that I think about it, Dad, I can remember very vividly being in our old kitchen, in the corner near the oven, trying eggnog. Wow. The memories come flooding back. *sniff*sniff*
Yeah, the front of Mom's van is a pretty weird place for a Christmas wreath, you gotta admit. But I'm not judging. ;)
Laura, thanks for taking the time to do this; I know you already did the email.
Loni ... there's so much to say. Are you EVER gonna let me live down the Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy-secret disclosing?? When you mentioned the Muppets song, I remembered that too. Love the ba-dum-bump-bump!! And Miss Piggy's "Christmas is coming," when she keeps singing after everyone else has stopped. HA!!
